Start from Bangalore early in the morning. Drive for about 3-3.5 hours to reach the historic town of Chitradurga. Chitradurga is known for its massive hill fort, stone ramparts and dramatic landscapes. The fort complex features multiple gateways, ancient temples, water reservoirs and panoramic viewpoints spread across a series of rocky hills. Later, visit some pre-historic caves behind the fort in Chitradurga.
After exploring Chitradurga, it is time to drive further towards Hampi (2.5 hours). Checkin to a hotel and relax.
Day 2: Explore Hampi
Today, you will need to hire a guide and explore the historic Hampi. Start with Vittala Temple and the iconic Stone Chariot. Later visit Royal Enclosure, Elephant Stable, Lotus Temple, Pushkarani, Hazar Rama Temple, Queen's Bath, and many other historic sites. As the sun starts getting milder, we head back to our hotel and relax.
Day 3: Explore Anegundi, Anjanadri. Back to Bangalore
Have an early breakfast and checkout of hotel. Drive to Anegundi (formerly known as the Kishkinda Kingdom or the Kingdom of Vanar Sena). It is here that Lord Rama met Sugriva. The nearby Anjanadri Hill is also the birth place of Hanuman. Visit Anjanadri Betta, Pampa Sarovar, Chintamani Temple, Krishna Devaraya Tomb.
After lunch, it is time to head back to Bangalore (7 hour drive). Reach Bangalore by late evening.
Why Visit Hampi?
Hampi is one of India's most fascinating destinations because it combines two distinct layers of history and mythology within the same landscape. On one hand, it was the capital of the powerful Vijayanagara Empire, one of the greatest kingdoms in South Indian history. The empire left behind an extraordinary collection of temples, royal enclosures, markets and stone monuments spread across a dramatic terrain of granite hills and riverbanks. These ruins, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reflect the scale, wealth and artistic achievements of a once-thriving medieval capital.
At the same time, the region is closely associated with the Kishkindha kingdom from the epic Ramayana. According to tradition, this is the land where Lord Rama met Hanuman and the Vanara king Sugriva. Several sites around Hampi, including Anjanadri Hill, are linked to these legendary stories, giving the destination a deep mythological and spiritual significance.
Because of this unique blend of historical grandeur and epic mythology, Hampi appeals not only to history enthusiasts but also to pilgrims, photographers and travelers seeking a culturally rich and visually striking destination.
How Many Days Are Required for a Hampi Tour?
To explore Hampi comfortably and experience both the main temple complexes and the wider heritage landscape, travelers typically require 3 to 4 days. This allows enough time to visit the major monuments, explore scenic viewpoints, and understand the historical and cultural significance of the region without rushing.
However, many travelers also visit Hampi as a weekend trip, especially from nearby cities. A 2-day itinerary can cover the most important sites such as the Virupaksha Temple, Vittala Temple complex, royal enclosures and key viewpoints. While this shorter trip offers a good introduction to Hampi, a longer stay allows travelers to explore the Kishkindha region around Anegundi, which is associated with the Ramayana.
With a 4-day itinerary, the journey can extend beyond the main ruins into quieter parts of the region, including a visit to a remote prehistoric landscape where traces of ancient stone-age habitation can still be seen. Reaching this offbeat location requires a gentle 45-minute walk from the last motorable point, making it a unique experience for travelers interested in lesser-known historical and cultural sites.
Can I Visit Chitradurga During My Hampi Tour?
Yes, Chitradurga can be added as a stop on the way to Hampi, especially for travelers interested in forts and regional history. The Chitradurga Fort is known for its massive stone ramparts, hilltop views and layered gateways spread across rocky terrain. A short visit here adds variety to the journey and works well for itineraries of 3 days or more
